Sugar & Spice

broken image

With tempting sweetness in each tiny crystalline granule, delightful to the tastebuds yet potentially hazardous to the human body, sugar presents us with quite a dilemma. Well, today I have some sweet ideas to share with you that involve lots of sugar, with no toll on your physical health! These recipes should actually help you feel refreshed after the fact. Here's the key: we will be keeping the sugar on the outside.

Harvest-themed, non-spooky October make-and-take, here we come! Collect your supplies, and let's get right down to it. A sugar scrub makes for a sumptuous gift when you want to make someone feel pampered by something special that they likely wouldn't buy for themselves. Even better, making the scrubs at home with the pure and beneficial dōTERRA® oils of your choosing is a fun do-it-yourself project.

Picture a jar with layers in the colorful fall shades of candy corn as we make this Festive Spice Sugar Scrub. You'll need:

  • 3/4 cup white sugar
  • 1/2 cup Fractionated Coconut Oil
  • 4 drops Cassia
  • 4 drops Clove
  • 2-4 drops Ginger
  • cute glass jar with tight-fitting lid

Combine sugar and Fractionated Coconut Oil in a bowl. Add essential oils, then stir until mixture is the consistency of a slushy. You might need to add more sugar or Fractionated Coconut Oil to achieve the desired consistency. This scrub is naturally white in color but can be changed with natural, skin-safe food coloring. For separate color layers, divide scrub into bowls to add color; then carefully pour each layer.

Sugar scrubs are a luxurious way to exfoliate and soften the skin, and they can be easily customized using different types of sugar (brown instead of white) or even sea salt in place of sugar. The base oil can be changed out from FCO to almond, grapeseed, or olive; and of course, the essential oils themselves can be swapped out for endless unique combinations. The Festive Spice Sugar Scrub above is gentle on the skin and leaves it with a delicious, spicy fall aroma.

Let's mix up some more sugar and spice, so we can keep Ginger Lime Brown Sugar Scrub on hand for both exfoliating and softening the skin during the harsh winter months. You'll need:

  • 1/4 cup brown sugar
  • 1/4 cup turbinado sugar
  • 1/2 cup Fractionated Coconut Oil
  • 10 drops Lime
  • 5 drops Ginger

Combine brown sugar, turbinado sugar, FCO, and essential oil in a bowl. Stir until well combined, then store in an air-tight container. To use, apply a small amount to hands and scrub for 30 seconds or until sugar dissolves. Rinse with warm water, pat dry, and follow up with dōTERRA spa hand lotion. Note: turbinado sugar is recommended because the larger grains can help achieve deeper exfoliation. Don't sweat if you don't have any turbinado; just use all brown sugar.

Use your sugar scrub one to two times every week, focusing on hands, feet, legs, or arms, wherever you can use the luxurious experience and pick-me-up. Give these scrubs as gifts, making for a season of treats rather than tricks! We've just poured out a whole cup of sugar and felt pampered without even spiking our blood sugar. Sweet!
